How do you prepare a boutique hotel in Andalusia for guests?
Not just with atmosphere and views —
but with water systems, permits, wifi infrastructure and weeks of quiet, unseen work.
From 20 December to 6 February, we worked on Cortijo La Vista in the province of Córdoba — so that when you arrive, calm simply feels natural.
What you see when you arrive is stillness.
What you don’t see is everything that made that possible.
Christmas with tools
Christmas felt like a holiday. My brother and sister-in-law were here.
But anyone who has ever done “a few small jobs” with family knows that this is a flexible definition.
Between Christmas dinner and coffee, shrubs were trimmed, branches removed and a cellar cleared of twenty years of “this might come in handy one day.”
My brother built a wall with double doors to the technical room.
He installed a fitted cabinet for the washing machine and dryer.
Invisible to guests.
Essential to comfort.
Because technology should never disturb the feeling of rest.
A good stay feels effortless — precisely because the back end works.
Our own “spa-quality” water from El Hoyo
We completed the water installation.
Tested everything.
And from that moment on, we officially had drinking water.
It sounds technical.
But for us, it meant something much bigger.
Guests can simply drink a glass of tap water here.
Without hesitation.
And — importantly — without the taste of chlorine.
Our own “spa-quality” water from El Hoyo.
Not spectacular for Instagram.
Fundamental for trust.
And ultimately, that’s what a boutique hotel is about.
The cable, the rodent — and why we do this in winter
One of the five power cables supplying electricity to the kitchen and hotel had been chewed through by a rodent somewhere in the garden.
The animal itself?
Nowhere to be found.
As if it sensed this wasn’t the right moment for confrontation.
The electrician repaired the cable.
We installed an additional wifi access point on the roof, ensuring stable internet — even by the pool at the foot of the hill.
No drama.
Just reality.
And exactly why we work quietly behind the scenes in winter.
So that in May and August, everything simply works
Twenty years of grease — and one clear decisio
Our professional kitchen received a deep clean.
Grease from twenty years ago in extractor hoods, walls and floors.
The kind of work where you briefly wonder:
was this ever white?
But when guests dine here, we don’t want to think:
“something questionable used to be here.”
We want to think:
this is right.
Calm does not come from beautiful words.
It comes from careful preparation.
You don’t learn Spain. You unravel it.
There was one administrative file that had been sitting in my mind for a year:
the modification of our tourism licence.
I contacted our gestor several times.
Asked what was missing.
Heard several times:
“It will be fine. The municipality is being a bit complicated.”
Gestors in Spain are not known for explaining process.
They operate on trust.
But somewhere between “it will be fine” and “we’ll handle it,” something else grew:
unease.
Not because I didn’t trust it.
But because I didn’t understand it.
So I started reading.
I translated the municipal notification again.
Line by line.
Placed legal terms side by side.
And then something remarkable appeared.
The decision of the municipal council already legally meant the licence was in our name.
In Spain, however, that does not automatically mean you receive a new document.
The licence displayed in the hotel — together with that official council decision — forms the valid permit.
And then came the second insight.
For the provincial modification, I had been told I first needed a municipal document.
But when I — with the help of my digital friend — went step by step through the Spanish application portal, reality turned out to be simpler:
The purchase deed was sufficient.
No extra stamp-collecting.
No “come back tomorrow.”
Just a portal, a form, some uploads and a series of Spanish sentences that you only truly understand after reading them three times — and briefly doubting your existence.
I worked my way through it.
Not elegantly.
Successfully.
The application is now under review.
And perhaps that is the biggest lesson here:
Integration does not mean accepting everything.
It means understanding how the system works — and then moving within it
Becoming part of the village
Something unexpectedly beautiful happened too.
We were helped by a Spanish woman and her Dutch husband who have been running a B&B in Córdoba for twenty years.
We celebrated Los Reyes Magos.
In Belmez, we experienced Los Días de la Tomilla, where villagers light thyme fires.
Feiko was renamed Antonio.
Because Feiko is a tongue-twister here.
Those are the moments you cannot plan.
But they are what turn a house into a place
Why this matters for your stay in Andalusia
Everything we did — from drinking water to wifi, from cellar walls to permit analysis — had one purpose:
So that when you arrive, you don’t have to arrange anything.
No doubts about water quality.
No unstable internet.
No technical chaos behind closed doors.
Just calm.
The rooms in our boutique hotel in Andalusia are now open for reservations in May and August.
But more importantly:
the foundation is solid enough to welcome you with ease.
