The Surroundings
Discover the Beautiful Alto Guadiato Region in Andalusia
A Region Full of Character
Between Córdoba and Extremadura lies a region still untouched by mass tourism. Here, rolling hills and cork oak forests blend into one another.
In the heart of the valley, the Castillo de Bélmez rises above the whitewashed houses — a landmark for centuries and a silent witness to the region’s rich history.
Culture & Heritage
In the region, you’ll find several places where history comes to life.
In Belmez, the Museo Histórico tells the story of mining and local traditions.
In Fuente Obejuna, the world-famous play Fuenteovejuna is performed every summer in the streets of the village.
And in Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo, the vast Cerco Industrial recalls the area’s mining past — impressive industrial heritage in the heart of Andalusia.

Hiking & Cycling
Around Cortijo La Vista, you’ll find a variety of hiking and cycling routes — from easy trails for beginners to more challenging mountain paths. Feel free to ask us for route maps or GPX files. We’re also happy to help plan a tailor-made route.
A special highlight is the Vía Verde de la Maquinilla: a former railway line that now forms a scenic cycling and walking route through the old mining landscape.
Nature & Tranquillity
Sierra de Hornachuelos
Less than an hour’s drive away, you’ll find yourself in the heart of the Parque Natural Sierra de Hornachuelos. Via Villaviciosa de Córdoba, you drive straight into this protected natural reserve — one of the largest and quietest nature parks in Andalusia. The area is known for its vast woodlands, rich birdlife and the impressive Embalse de Bembézar (reservoir).
At the edge of the cliffs stands the Seminario Santa María de los Ángeles, a former Franciscan monastery dating back to 1490. For centuries, monks lived here in silence and prayer. Later, it became a seminary and even the residence of the Marquises of Peñaflor. Today, it serves a new purpose, yet its mystical atmosphere and elevated position above the valley still make it a truly remarkable place.
For our guests, it is a beautiful area to explore on foot: along the old paths of the Sierra de Hornachuelos, you may spot vultures and eagles circling above the cliffs, centuries-old oak trees, and a silence broken only by the sounds of nature.

Fishing & Birdwatching
Just ten minutes from our cortijo lies the Sierra Boyera reservoir — a peaceful oasis for both anglers and bird lovers. You can fish for perch, carp or pike while enjoying the quiet and the chance to spot remarkable bird species, such as the Iberian golden oriole or the black stork. In winter, large groups of flamingos sometimes appear, tinting the water a soft pink.
And if you look up, you’ll often see majestic griffon vultures circling above the Sierra Morena — sometimes even from our own terrace, while relaxing on a sunbed. With a bit of luck, the rare Spanish imperial eagle may also show itself.
This makes our area unique for birdwatchers: a vast natural landscape to explore, and the luxury of enjoying these impressive species right from the “back garden” of the cortijo.
Please note: fishing in Andalusia requires a permit. You can easily apply for one online via the Junta de Andalucía website. Keep in mind that as a tourist, you will need an NIE (Spanish identification number) to obtain the permit.
Restaurants & Local Dishes
In the surrounding villages — such as Belmez, Fuente Obejuna and Peñarroya-Pueblonuevo — you’ll find small, authentic places to eat.
Here, you can taste traditional Andalusian cooking, with dishes often still prepared according to old family recipes. Think of flamenquín, hearty stews with local mushrooms or game.
And don’t forget to try salmorejo cordobés — a creamy cold soup that has become one of Córdoba’s signature flavours.
Traditions & Festivals
In the Alto Guadiato region, cultural heritage lives on in many local festivities. Every village celebrates its own feria, often dedicated to a patron saint. Think processions, flamenco, horses, tapas and fireworks. Feel free to ask us about the celebrations taking place during your stay.
Equally impressive is Semana Santa in Córdoba, where centuries-old processions move through the streets of the city.
On the Guadiato regional website you’ll find an extensive overview of markets, gastronomy, events and points of interest — perfect for enriching your stay even further.
